Just like movies, I have a wide variety of types of music I like. However, it is fairly defined the types I don't like. In particular, I really don't like Opera. That's pretty much it. I can tolerate just about anything else. I like some musicals, but overall I am not a fan of Broadway productions. And I prefer old school rap over what attempts to pass for rap these days.
My favorite form of music is progressive rock, and as such, my favorite band is Kansas. I am also a big fan of Rush, Yes, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, and Dream Theatre. Other favorites include Megadeath, Metallica, Queensryche, and Queen. Some might ask, why isn't Styx on the list. Part of this is, they have changed members and styles so many times, that some of Styx I really like, and some of it I don't. Besides, they only have one original member left now.
For good ole hard rock, favorites include Boston, Extreme, Triumph, Def Leppard, Van Halen, and Motley Crue.
For new rock, one of my favorite bands is Stone Temple Pilots. I am also a fan of Live, Collective Soul, Linkin Park, Creed (and the new reformed group Alter Bridge), and Dave Mathews.
I also like a lot of what I call alternative instrument rock. Basically this is where a group uses instruments outside the typical modern rock ensemble of guitars and drums. Some favorites include Blue Man Group and Cake.
I like a wide variety of techno/electronica, mostly anything that isn't too dancy, and I like mostly European techno. I don't really have any favorite groups or artists. I either like it or I don't. Most of what I have is various artists. My favorite musical is The Music Man, but I like a lot Gershwin material as well. And my favorite classical pieces are Dvorak's Carnival Overture, and Holst's The Planets.
And I am a huge Wierd Al Yankovic fan as well. Honorable mention to The Dead Milkmen as well.
